United Way has three critical issue areas: Education, Income and Health - the building blocks to a good life. Our goal is to create long-lasting change by addressing our community's most serious problems through providing access to high-quality basic needs services and breaking the cycle of poverty.
As we prepare for another exciting Community Campaign, we invite you to join us for one of the 2010 Employee Campaign Coordinator (ECC) Training Sessions at United Way of Greater Milwaukee (225 W. Vine St.). These sessions are designed to equip both veteran and beginner ECCs with important tools and fresh ideas to make workplace giving campaigns fun, relevant and successful. For the 2010 United Way Community Campaign we have a record number of Cabinet members and volunteer solicitors. The Cabinet includes 83 cabinet members, and there are over 380 volunteer solicitors from companies and organizations throughout the Greater Milwaukee Area. When we unite, it allows each of us to make the greatest difference with our charitable contribution - no matter how big or small. That's what it means to LIVE UNITED.
Live United. Volunteer. United Way and the Volunteer Center of Greater Milwaukee invite you and your co-workers to put your talents to work. Join thousands of committed volunteers and make an immediate, visible impact on our community's critical needs through the annual Days of Caring program. By helping today, we strengthen tomorrow. A diverse range of volunteer projects are available to meet the interests and schedule of your organization. Volunteer projects range from painting a mural to building a playground, from reading to children, to playing bingo with older adults. Projects typically last three to five hours and are staggered throughout the two week timeframe.

The United Way Emerging Leaders, a group of leadership donors mainly under the age of 45, participated in a national Emerging Leaders Day of Action on June 21. Over 50 Emerging Leaders volunteered at COA Youth and Family Centers: Rose & Harry Samson Family Center. They planted flowers around the building and held a kickball tournament with children at the center. Thomas Schneider, the Executive Director of COA Youth and Family Centers spoke to the volunteers and thanked them for volunteering and supporting United Way. Thank you to all the Emerging Leaders who participated in the Day of Action.
The Corporation for National and Community Service reports 40 percent of Wisconsin's college students volunteered to help their communities last year - ranking them third in the nation. That spirit of volunteerism was reflected in 200 college interns who completed one-day community service projects throughout Milwaukee on July 1. They were part of United Way of Greater Milwaukee's Student Day of Action. The students volunteered at a variety of community agencies and worked on projects such as landscaping, reading with kids, painting, building a bike trail and rebuilding recycled computers. Most of the volunteers are summer interns at Briggs & Stratton, Direct Supply, GE Healthcare, MillerCoors and Rockwell Automation. United Way's Student Day of Action was sponsored by Rockwell Automation, which was insturmental in inspiring other organizations to get involved and share their strong cultures of community service with their summer interns.

The sugar rush was on as The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc. held early bake sales during the months of May and June to raise over $10,000 for United Way. Employees were treated to a variety of creative and delicious bake sale days that also included a raffle for fun gifts like a Summerfest gift basket and a Dinner & a Movie Night package. More to come as company organizers are in the process of planning their first ever golf outing for later this summer. Kudos to the Bon-Ton team, for their early energy and enthusiasm to help jumpstart United Way's 2010 campaign!
As part of its 2010 campaign kickoff, UPS coordinated a district-wide Stuff the Truck food drive. As part of this drive, a package car was placed outside of each of their main buildings on July 1 and was left open for employees to drop off donations and stuff the truck with food through July 15. The food will be donated to local food pantries. UPS will hold its United Way campaign kickoff with Keith Tozer of the Milwaukee Wave as the speaker on July 16.
