Nearly one in 10 children born each year in Southeastern Wisconsin’s seven-county region will develop a disability, according to a study by Milwaukee Center for Independence. The costs associated with their care throughout their lifetimes, including residential care, medical care, education, and home and vehicle adaptation costs adds up to $15 billion. To address the need in our community, United Way of Greater Milwaukee and the Northwestern Mutual Foundation have launched the Disabilities Solutions Collaborative to support Milwaukeeans with special needs. The collaborative is a multi-year strategy to improve access to quality care for individuals with cognitive and physical disabilities and support resources for their families. Collaborating with Greater Milwaukee nonprofits, the Foundation and United Way are hosting a series of roundtable events to develop a strategic, communitywide plan including short- and long-term goals.
