For the third consecutive year, United Way of Greater Milwaukee has again achieved a Four Star rating, from Charity Navigator, America's largest independent evaluator of charities. Their description of a four-star charity is: "Exceeds industry standards and outperforms most charities in its Cause."

United Way of Greater Milwaukee is . . .

  • one of only 20 Wisconsin charities rated by Charity Navigator to earn a Four Star rating. Overall, 75 Wisconsin charities were rated.
  • one of nine Four Star Wisconsin charities within the Human Services and/or Public Benefit categories.
  • one of only three fundraising organization within Wisconsin to receive a Four Star rating.

Annually, Charity Navigator rates over 5,200 charities in organizational efficiency and capacity. The overall ratings show the public how efficiently a charity will use their support today, and to what extent the charities are growing their programs and services over time. These categories include:

Stated Mission:

Charity Navigator works to guide intelligent giving. We help charitable givers make intelligent giving decisions by providing information on over five thousand charities and by evaluating the financial health of each of these charities. We ensure our evaluations are widely used by making them easy to understand and freely available to the public. By guiding intelligent giving, we aim to advance a more efficient and responsive philanthropic marketplace, in which givers and the charities they support work in tandem to overcome our nation's most persistent challenges.

Charity Navigator is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization under the Internal Revenue Code and does not accept any contributions from any charities we evaluate.

Of the approximately 5,000 charities currently rated by Charity Navigator, approximately 33 percent are organizations categorized as Human Services and Public Benefit organizations such as United Way. Nationally, as a fundraising organization, only 64 of the 333 charities rated have received a Four Star rating.

United Way of Greater Milwaukee is proud to again be a Four Star rated charity for 2007 and continues to work diligently at leading the charitable efforts within the community through efficient and effective practices.
