$36 Million Investment in Improving Lives

(Milwaukee, WI - September 8) The roar of motorcycles and the cheers of nearly 500 United Way supporters filled the Wisconsin Expo Center as United Way of Greater Milwaukee kicked-off its 2004 Community Campaign. Community Campaign chairs, Jeffrey A. Joerres, chairman and CEO o f Manpower Inc., and Dennis J. Kuester, president and CEO of Marshall & Ilsley Corporation began the event by leading a procession of supporters riding motorcycles, a trolley and a school bus through Wisconsin State Fair Park.

Inside the Expo Center, Joerres and Kuester joined fellow co-chair Gail A. Lione, vice president, general counsel and secretary of Harley-Davidson, Inc. in a community pep rally for what matters. The high-spirited rally, replete with

bandanas and tattoos, gave area business leaders, volunteers, staff, agencies and local civic leaders - including Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker and City of Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett - the opportunity to energize rally participants about what matters in the community.

Supporters applauded the announcement that United Way has set a goal of $36 million to invest in improving lives within the Greater Milwaukee community. Jeff Joerres said, "The core business of United Way is to bring about meaningful and tangible impact on the most critical community problems. What matters is the lives we improve and the impact we can have in shaping this community for the future."

Dennis Kuester agreed, "We know what matters to this community - your families, jobs, basic needs, education, and good health. We've listened and now it is up to us to gather and commit the resources of the entire community and focus them on what matters to make that vision a reality."

Gail Lione cited the importance of United Way in the community and said, " What is unique and powerful about United Way of Greater Milwaukee is that it is not a single-issue organization. It is focused on the best way to impact a number of the community's most critical and challenging needs."

Joerres, Kuester and Lione are confident that the $36 million goal is attainable. The money raised will support a community safety net and begin to invest in cooperative programs to break the cycle of poverty over time. They are encouraged by the continued and enthusiastic support of companies that championed the 2003 United Way Community Campaign by each giving in excess of $1 million through combined workplace and corporate giving. Those companies include a $2 million campaign at Northwestern Mutual, and campaigns of $1 million or more at Johnson Controls, Marshall & Ilsley Corporation, Rockwell Automation, Aurora Health Care, We Energies, Harley-Davidson Motor Company and GE Medical Systems.

In addition, Harley-Davidson Motor Company will rev up the excitement for this year's Campaign with the donation of a 2005 Harley-Davidson Road King Custom motorcycle. Community Campaign donors will have the opportunity to enter a special $25 drawing to win this bike and someone will ride home on a Harley-Davidson Motorcycle at the end of the campaign.
