What is Born Learning™?
The Born Learning Initiative is a national United Way initiative designed to help parents, grandparents, caregivers, child care professionals, teachers and others, in the critical role of a child's first teacher.
What is United Way of Greater Milwaukee doing to support this initiative?
We are engaged in 3 major early childhood initiatives that support local programs in Milwaukee County. For over 20 years, UWGM has invested over $2 million annually in community early childhood education programs. Just last year, UWGM invested an additional $454,446 as part of our “Breaking the Cycle of Poverty” initiative. United Way of Greater Milwaukee will continue to approach early childhood through localized initiatives.
What are some of the early childhood programs that UWGM supports?
United Way supports over 15 separate programs in our community to increase and improve early childhood education for parents, caregivers and teachers - in addition to addressing early childhood education policy. United Way of Greater Milwaukee, along with Milwaukee Public Schools, Wisconsin government and local foundations, launched several programs that are now self-sufficient including “Think Big, Start Small” and the Early Childhood Brain Development initiative. Additionally, United Way of Greater Milwaukee played a lead role, in conjunction with Milwaukee County, in establishing The Early Childhood Council – now operating in its fifth year. UWGM also served as the fiscal agent for the 3-year signature project of the Council. Finally, early childhood education is a main component of UWGM’s Breaking the Cycle of Poverty initiative, and is most closely aligned with Born Learning with a focus on positioning the parent, grandparent, caregiver as the child’s first teacher.
